Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability was discovered in VBScript and JScript scripting engines in Microsoft Internet Explorer. VBScript stands for Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition that includes Web client scripting in Microsoft Internet Explorer and Web server scripting in Microsoft Internet Information Service. JScript is the Microsoft implementation of the ECMA 262 language specification (ECMAScript Edition 3). A remote attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code on an affected system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to an error in the scripting engines in Microsoft Internet Explorer that fail to properly decode certain scripts in web pages. To trigger this issue, an attacker could convince a user to visit a malicious web page that will exploit this flaw. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block any attempt to exploit this vulnerability. Depending on the traffic mix, activating this protection may result in performance degradation.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1/InterSpect product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.

1. In the SmartDefense tab, click Web Intelligence > HTTP Client Protections > Microsoft Internet Explorer Vulnerabilities > Block MS VBScript and JScript Vulnerability (MS08-022).
2. In the configuration pane, under Settings > Mode, check Active.
3. Install policy on all modules.
