Vulnerability Description
A denial of service vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Active Directory. Active Directory provides central authentication and authorization services for Windows-based systems. Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory service that runs as a user service. A remote attacker can exploit this issue to create a denial of service condition on a vulnerable system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to improper memory management during execution of certain types of LDAP or LDAPS requests. The LDAP service improperly manages memory while executing LDAP or LDAPS requests which contain specific Object Identifier (OID) filters, which are used to name an LDAP object. A remote attacker may trigger this issue by sending a specially crafted LDAP or LDAPS packet to the ADAM or to an Active Directory server. Successful exploitation of this issue could create a denial of service condition, causing the system to become non-responsive.

Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block malformed LDAP requests sent to the vulnerable server.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.
