Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability has been reported in the way that the Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) client validates specially crafted SMB responses. The SMB Protocol is a network file sharing protocol that is implemented in Microsoft Windows. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could execute arbitrary code and take complete control of an affected system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to an error in the SMB client implementation that improperly validates specially crafted SMB responses. A remote attacker could exploit this issue by sending a specially crafted SMB response to a client-initiated SMB request. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow the attacker to take complete control of an affected system.

Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block specially crafted SMB responses. IPS-1 has been preemptive against this issue since April 10 of 2010. No protection is required for IPS-1 users.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.
