Vulnerability Description
A remote code execution vulnerability has been identified in the way Microsoft Excel processes objects when loading Excel files into memory. Microsoft Excel is a popular spreadsheet application. A remote attacker could exploit this issue via a malformed BIFF file. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow execution of arbitrary code on a target system.

Vulnerability Details
The vulnerability is due to an error in Microsoft Excel that fails to perform sufficient validation when parsing BIFF files. An attacker can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system via a specially crafted BIFF file.

Protection Overview
By enabling this protection, SmartDefense will detect and block the transferring of malformed Excel files over HTTP.

In order for the protection to be activated, update your VPN-1 product to the latest SmartDefense update. For information on how to update SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab and select the version of your choice.

To configure the defense, select your product from the list below and follow the related protection steps.

How Can I Protect My Network?
1. In the SmartDefense tab, click Application Intelligence > Content Protection > Block Microsoft Excel File Format Parsing (MS08-057).
2. In the configuration pane, under Settings > Mode, check Active.
3. Install policy on all modules.
