| Vulnerability Description A remote code execution vulnerability has been discovered in the way that Microsoft Office parses specially crafted TIFF image files. Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) is a container format for storing images, including photographs and line art. A remote attacker may trigger this issue via a specially crafted TIFF file. Successful exploitation would allow execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. |

Vulnerability Details The vulnerability is due to an error in Microsoft Office TIFF Image Converter that fails to properly validate data in TIFF image files. A remote attacker may trigger this issue by convincing a user to open a specially crafted TIFF image file. By persuading a user to open the malformed TIFF file, an attacker could take complete control of an affected system. |
Protection Overview
This protection will detect and block the transferring of malformed TIFF files over HTTP.
In order for the protection to be activated, update your Security Gateway/VPN-1 product to the latest IPS/SmartDefense update. For information on how to update IPS/SmartDefense, go to SBP-2006-05, Protection tab, and select the version of your choice.
