Media Alert: Check Point Has Longstanding Preemptive Protection Against LAND Attacks Like Those Threatening Windows XP SP-2 and 2003 Servers
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., - March 8, 2005 - Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), the worldwide leader in securing the Internet, today announced that its industry-leading VPN-1® Pro Next Generation™ with Application Intelligence and InterSpect™ provide preemptive protection against LAND attacks on Windows XP SP-2 and Windows 2003 servers. If exploited, this attack will cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on unprotected systems.
The LAND vulnerability has been known for many years, and Check Point has provided a preemptive defense against it since 1999. Recently, a proof-of-concept exploit posted on the Internet demonstrated that MicroSoft Windows XP SP-2 and 2003 servers are still vulnerable to the historic attack. A LAND attack could occur if a remote hacker sent a single specially crafted packet to an affected system, resulting in resource consumption and ultimately a DoS condition. Users of Check Point's VPN-1 Pro Next Generation with Application Intelligence and InterSpect are automatically protected against this vulnerability.
